What I remember about ?The Twist? is that I first heard it on the radio by ?Hank Ballard and the Midnighters.? About a year later, when popularity was fading, I heard the song on the radio again, this time by Chubby Checker. The song became his trademark and propelled his career to a new level. With no mention of Hank Ballard and the Midnighters, Chubby Checker even appeared to get credit for the song!
Now, with a little help from the Internet and Wikipedia, I learned why. Dick Clark wanted ?the Twist? on American Bandstand. Hank Ballard and the Midnighters were not available, so he got Chubby Checker to do it. Incidentally, Chubby Checker was named after Fats Domino by Dick Clark?s wife.
But I do not believe that it was well known at the time that the Twist dance and inspiration for the song may have originated on Central Avenue.
And although Tampa may now like to have recognition for the Twist, remember that in the day, (controversial) Fred Barksdale banned the dance from Tampa Community Centers!
